Why Muscle Matters

Whether you're new to your fitness journey or you've had a pretty regular workout routine for a while, you might not know exactly why building muscle matters. Building muscle can change your appearance, of course, making you look more toned, but that's not the only thing that healthy muscles do for you! I know it's great to look great, but the health benefits of muscle will take you so much further than the physical benefits!
Let's break down it down:
1. Increased BMR
Muscle tissue is metabolically active and requires more energy to maintain than fat, even when you're resting. That means that your basal metabolic rate will increase with more muscle mass, helping you keep your metabolism in tip-top shape and making it easier to manage weight and lose fat.
2. Enhanced insulin sensitivity
Insulin is important for regulating blood sugar levels. Greater insulin sensitivity makes it easier for your body to regulate, lowering the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. This is especially important for women who are in perimenopause or going through menopause, as insulin sensitivity starts to decline.
3. Fat oxidation
Having more muscle mass on your body boosts your body's ability to burn fat—especially during and after a workout.
4. Hormonal balance
Stressed about your hormone health? Building muscle may help! Muscle growth can boost anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone, which help with muscle repair. Regular exercise can also lower levels of cortisol—a stress hormone. Too much cortisol can encourage your body to accumulate fat.
5. Mitochondrial efficiency
Building muscle can help boost mitochondrial density and efficiency, which means more energy production and better overall metabolic functioning.
6. Physical performance
More muscle mass boosts your body's strength and endurance, which means you'll have a stronger body overall.
7. Age-Related protections
Building muscle can help keep sarcopenia away. Sarcopenia is age-related muscle loss, which can weaken your body and health overall. Keeping your muscles healthy and strong can lead to better overall health as you age. Not only that, but the resistance training you're using for building muscle also helps boost bone density, which is also at risk when we get older.
8. Toned muscles mean an overall toned aesthetic.
It's not all about appearance, but building and toning your muscles does affect the way you look! That, in turn, affects how you feel and boosts your confidence 10-fold!
